"The United Nations marks this May 20 as World Bee Day.
With the hashtags #WorldBeeDay and #Savethebees , the UN draws the attention of policymakers and the public to the importance of protecting pollinators.
The date highlights the world's dependence on these insects and the need for conservation to address global food supply issues and the elimination of hunger in developing countries.
About 90% of wildflower plant species depend wholly or partly on animal pollination. So are more than two-thirds of food crops and 35% of global farmland.
According to the UN, the action of pollinators not only contributes, in a direct way, to food security, but is also fundamental for the conservation of biodiversity."
